Biography

Once the quintessential sassy girl of the big screen, Urmila Matondkar has largely disappeared from the industry ever since.

Age and Height

Urmila Matondkar was born on 4 February 1974 and is 44 years old as of 2018. She stands 5 feet 3 inches tall.

Marriage/Relationships

During her long association with director Ram Gopal Verma, there were strong rumours that the two were dating. However, neither of them confirmed or denied it.
Urmila married businessman and model Mohsin Akhtar Mir on 3 March 2016. The two were dating for an unspecified amount of time.

Family

Urmila was born in Mumbai to Shivinder Singh and Rukshana Sultana. She has two sisters, Mamta and Pooja, and a brother, Kedar.

Career

The talented actress started her career as a child artist. After a small role in 1977 film Karm, she got major roles in Marathi film Zaakol and Hindi film Kalyug, both in 1980. However, it was her role in the 1983 film Masoom that showcased her acting prowess even at a young age. After that, Urmila kept doing a few roles but focused largely on her studies.

She made her adult debut in Malayalam with the 1989 film Chanakyam. In 1991, she made her Bollywood debut with Narasimha. The next year she appeared opposite Shahrukh Khan in Chamatkar. All her films were successful thus far. In 1992, she began her long association with Ram Gopal Verma, starting with Antham/Drohi and Gaayam.

However, while her career in Telugu industry was successful, her Bollywood career was going downhill. This changed with the 1995 film Rangeela, which is now considered a modern classic. The next Hindi film she appeared in was Judaai (1997), another huge success. She starred in two more films by RGV, Daud and Satya, the latter earning her further success and praise. In 1998 she appeared in the song "Chamma Chamma," which instantly made her the heartthrob of the nation. After 1998, Urmila was established as a top actress and started getting multiple offers.

Despite the success rides, Urmila wasn’t hesitant in experimenting with roles, whether it was the dorky girl in Khoobsurat (1999), an obsessive lover in Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya (2001), or a serial killer in Kaun (1999). Even though commercial successes kept getting scarce, she almost constantly received critical acclaim. However, after Pinjar and Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara, both critical and commercial successes went absent in her career. Over the next decade, she then starred in a handful of films, most of which performed abysmally on box office. Her last credited role was in Ajoba, after which she semi-retired from acting.

Awards

Out of her six Filmfare nominations, Urmila won one Best Actress (Critics) award for Bhoot. For the same film, she won Star Screen Best Actress award and Zee Cine Best Actor (Female) award. She also won Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Award for special achievement in films.

Trivia

Between her transition from a child to adult actor, Urmila was active on television. She later appeared on many reality shows as a judge. Urmila used to be a smoker but has since quit the habit.
