Family
Mammootty was born as Muhammad Kutty Ismail Paniparambil to Ismail and Fatima. He was the eldest among his siblings. He has three sisters and two brothers. His brother Ibrahim and nephew Maqbool Salmaan are also actors in the Malayalam industry.
Career
Mammootty made his debut in films in 1971 with Anubhavangal Paalichakal but in a minor role. Over the decade, he kept getting small, uncredited roles. His first film as a lead was Mela in 1980. The success of the film led to many subsequent projects like Sphodanam and Ahimsa, the latter earning him critical acclaim. He also started giving commercial hits like Yavanika, Padayottam and Ee Nadu. The huge consecutive successes lined up projects for Mammootty, and he became one of the busiest actors in the country. Between 1982 and 1987, he appeared in almost 150 films. However, despite a large number of appearances, the ratio of flops was getting bigger than the hits. Thus, in 1987, Mammootty decided to favour quality over quantity. He starred in New Delhi and Thaniyavarthanam, which were big successes. In 1988 he also starred in Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, whose success paved the way for the CBI franchise. While ensuring commercial success, Mammootty also took care of critical acclaim. Films like
Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, Mrigaya, Mahanayam, Amaram, Vidheyan and Ponthan Mada were showered with praise by the critics. Bhoothakannadi in 1997 was a huge success while Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar earned him another National Award. Mammootty ended the millennium by starring with Mohanalal for the first time in the huge blockbuster Harikrishnans.
In the 21st century too, Mammootty kept giving out commercial and critical successes. Some of these were Arayannagalude Veedu, Valliettan, Chronic Bachelor, Kazhcha, Vesham, Rajamanikyam, Thuruppu Gulan, Pazhassi Raja, Paleri Manikyam, and Varsham. Despite his age, Mammootty continues devoting his maximum time to shooting films.
