Hailed as one of the top South Indian actresses, Jyothika has been in the industry for two long decades.

Age and Height

Jyothika was born on 18 October 1977 and she is 41 years old (as of 2018). She was born in Mumbai, India. Currently, her residence is in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Jyothika is 5 feet and 6 inches tall.   

Marriage/Relationships

When things came down to link up and having affairs, Jyothika kept things under wrap. Her relationship with her husband Suriya was something that grew over time. In fact, it took some time for Surya, given his shy nature to actually propose her for marriage.

The couple finally tied knots on 11th September 2006. It was a traditional marriage which took place in the Park Sheraton hotel, Chennai. The couple had their first baby in 2007, Diya, in 2010, the couple had their second baby and this time it was a son who was named Dev.

Family

Jyothika is the daughter of famous film producer Chander Sadanah who is Punjabi by origin, and her mother is Seema Sadanah who is a native of Maharashtra. Interestingly, actress Nagma is her half-sister. She has a younger sister Roshni, who is also a famous South Indian actress.

Career

Jyothika entered into the film industry with a Priyadarshan movie, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna. This movie was released way back in 1998. Her South Indian debut was in the movie Vaali for which she won best debut actress south, Filmfare award. The turning point of the veteran south Indian actress came with the release of the movie Kushi.

Post the success of Kushi, she did a bunch of movies which were straight out success. She even collaborated with the likes of Kamal Hassan and Mani Ratnam.

She has been considered as the female equivalent of Kamal Hassan in the South Indian film industry. Among the numerous movies that she has done till date, her most successful movie was opposite Rajinikanth in 2005, Chandramukhi. There are a number of other movies which she has done post her comeback, including 36 Vayadhinile, Nagavalli, Mozhi, and many more. Some failed to leave a mark, while others were outright hit.  

Some of her latest releases include Naachiyaar, Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. and Kaatrin Mozhi.

Controversies

In November 2015, a petition was filed by a resident of Mettupalayam due to the derogatory language used by the actress in one scene. According to the petitioner, use of such language was demeaning for all women. The teaser of the movie Naachiyaar, which has sparked the controversy was released by her husband, Suriya.

Awards

Jyothika has received many awards in her career. Her first award was Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South for the movie Vaali, released in 1999. In 2001, she had received the Filmfare Awards South for Best Actress. She also won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress in 2004, 2005 and 2007. Recently, she received Filmfare for Critics Awards for Best Actress South in 2016. 

Trivia

Despite having such a glorious career down South, she worked in only one Bollywood movie, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna.
